"LNG [liquefied natural gas] marine fuel is the way of the future," Shane Guidry, CEO of Harvey Gulf International Marine, told local newspaper the Daily Comet.

"I'm investing more in LNG than any government agency or private company," he added.

Harvey Gulf said buying LNG from his company's new bunkering station, now under construction in the U.S. state of Louisiana, will save customers as much as $9,000 per day.

"If the boat is cheaper to operate, it makes it more attractive to the end user," he said.

"The maintenance is less, it's more attractive to me over the long-term."

Guidry said the company's $400 million investment in the station and six LNG-powered ships will help it gain an advantage in winning oilfield support contracts in the fast-growing deepwater Gulf of Mexico market and beyond.

Construction on the facility just began, and it is expected to start serving ships later this year.
