Following the vessel's capsizing on September 5 and a subsequent lube oil spill at Franks Tract near Bethel Island, The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) says it is now looking to debunker the Spirit of Sacramento.

An undefined amount of lube oil, which had been released but remained inside the vessel's immediate vicinity, had been recovered using absorbent pads.

USCG says it first responded to a report on September 4 that the 87-foot vessel was taking on water, which later led to the vessel capsizing overnight, causing minor sheening on the water.

Divers from Global Diving and Salvage, Inc., (Global Diving) are said to have since plugged all fuel vents aboard the vessel, securing the 600 gallons of diesel onboard.

Vessel schematics are noted to have shown that the vessel has a total fuel capacity of 4,500 gallons.

The vessel is noted to be no longer registered as USCG inspected vessel, and is therefore classified as a recreational vessel.

On the same day as the Spirit of Sacremento capsized, USCG also announced that the Houston Ship Channel had been closed in a more than one mile section after a bunker spill followed a fire on Panama-flagged Aframax River the previous evening.
