The U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) said this evening that it is to step in to mediate the current labour dispute that has resulted in disruption to port and bunkering operations at Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach.

"Based on a joint request from the parties, negotiations between the International Longshoremen and Warehouse Union Office Clerical Workers and the Harbor Employers Association will be conducted under FMCS auspices. I and Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh will convene the parties for an initial meeting at a date and location to be determined," said FMCS Director George H. Cohen.

"Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS's long-standing practice, the Agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice," he added.

Updated statements today by Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach said seven of eight, and three of its six terminals respectively remained closed.

FMCS is also mediating in the current labour dispute affecting some 14,500 jobs on the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts.
