Myanmar police say they have several new leads suggesting crew members were involved in a bunker pirate attack that saw the theft of 3 million litres of diesel from a tanker in the Malacca Strait on Wednesday, local newspaper the Malay Mail reports.

Diesel valued at RM8.2 million ($2.5 million) was stolen by eight men believed to be Indonesians, and three crew members who were taken along when the pirates left were also Indonesian, Federal Marine Police deputy commander ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah said.

He said the crew members who disappeared with the robbers were the captain, first officer, and chief engineer.

"Our investigation focus will be more towards the participation of the crewmen involved and some manipulation of manifest and consignment," Abdul Rahim said.

The Naninwu Maru 1 was attacked near Port Klang, Malaysia around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning.
