Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line (NYK Line) says it will charter eight fuel-efficient new 14,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containerships that will be built at Japan Marine United Co. Ltd.'s shipyard in Kure.

The 123,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) ships will be delivered between February 2016 and January 2018.

They will replace existing vessels on the Asia-Europe trade, including four 13,000 TEU vessels chartered from Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).

In addition to improved fuel efficiency, the new ships will offer better cargo loadability than current models.

The ships will be about 364 meters long, with a 15-meter draft and be registered in Panama.

"NYK will continue its efforts to provide higher quality, more competitive services for our customers through the introduction of eco-friendly ships," the company said.

The company has said that reductions in its fuel consumption helped its 2013 results.
