The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) this week announced at its convention in Hamburg that it has achieved accreditation from the Mariitime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) for a new Mass Flow Meter (MFM) training course.

"This is the latest in our range of professional training courses for the bunkering industry," said IBIA CEO Peter Hall.

"Ultimately, the use of mass flow meter[s] will result in a smoother bunker transaction landscape with less commercial disputes, shorter delivery times and a simpler custody transfer process."

The course, which is to be held between November 17 and 18 in Singapore, will cover how to install and use MFMs as well as calibration, accuracy, and relevant legislative issues.

IBIA said in an emailed statement that MFMs will "allow for greater efficiency, accuracy and transparency in the bunkering industry" but some have worried about the effect on bunker prices.

An audience at last month's SIBCON conference in Singapore heard that MFMs will mean higher fuel prices on paper but fuel buyers will save overall.
