Over 21% of Singapore Bunker Tankers Now Fitted with MPA Approved Mass Flow Meters
Over 21 percent of bunker tankers in Singapore are now fitted with a Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) approved mass flow metering (MFM) system, according to the MPA's latest December data.
A total of 48 bunker tankers, of Singapore's current total of 225 approved vessels overall, now have officially approved MFM systems, a significant uptick from just 33 less than 2 months ago.
Among the most recent to gain approval were the 3,991 gross tonne (GT) Poseidon, and the 2,650 GT Hywela, who both gained MPA approved status on November 24, 2015.
In April 2014 MPA announced that from January 1, 2017 it will be mandatory to use a MFM system for Marine Fuel Oil (MFO) bunkering in Singapore, having previously told Ship & Bunker of its intention to make the move in September 2013.
Singapore is the first port in the world to mandate the use of MFM technology.
ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants, the first supplier to use an MPA approved MFM in Singapore, last year told Ship & Bunker the technology can save buyers both time and money.
