South Korea's S-Oil has started low sulfur bunker sales, and shipped its first cargo on Wednesday this week, a company source has told Platts.

The company has already sold 1,000-2,000 metric tonnes (mt) of bunker fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 1 percent by weight, and expects monthly sales to hit 5,000-10,000 mt, the source said.

Ship & Bunker reported in February that the company was planning to begin sales of the product this month, and is supplying the fuel from its 669,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery in Onsan.

Fellow South Korean suppliers SK Energy and GS Caltex began sales of the low-sulfur fuel in June last year, shortly before the August introduction of a 1 percent limit on the sulfur content of bunkers in the North American Emissions Control Area (ECA).

Hyundai Oilbank started selling low sulfur bunker fuel in March this year from its 390,000 bpd Daesan refinery in the country's west, and was reported to be expecting its sales volume to hit about 1,500 mt per month.
