The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Friday announced that construction has begun on Singapore's Tuas Terminal Phase 1 project, noting amongst other things that the completed project will help bunker suppliers and other service providers at the port increase efficiency.

"The Tuas Terminal will ... have a customer-centric intelligent system that facilitates maritime businesses and services, such as allowing vessels to arrive at the terminals just-in-time, and enable maritime service providers like bunker suppliers and pilots and tugs providers, the ability to conduct forward planning before the vessels arrive, thus reducing waiting time and increasing port efficiency and turnaround times," said Andrew Tan, MPA's CEO, in an address at the project's opening ceremony Friday.

Further, the MPA says that the completed port project will utilise the Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System, intended to "assist vessels to avoid congestion through early detection of congestion hot spots and advise the best route to reach the berths safely and efficiently."

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, once completed, the Tuas Terminal Phase 1 - part of a $1.83 billion port project investment - is expected to have 20 deep-water berths with a capacity of 20 million TEU per year.

"The Tuas Terminal is a centrepiece of Singapore's Next Generation Port vision and demonstrates our strong commitment to strengthening and sustaining our leadership position as a global hub port and International Maritime Centre," said Tan.

"To stay relevant, we have to adapt as the world changes, and stay ahead of the game by being more efficient, innovative and productive."

Last month Ship & Bunker reported that preliminary data from MPA showed that Singapore had posted its highest ever Q1 bunker sales during the first three months of 2016.
