Egyptian authorities say they foiled an attack Saturday on the Panama-registered Cosco Asia while it was traversing the Suez Canal, the BBC reports.

"The situation was dealt with strictly by the armed forces," Canal head Adm Mamish said in a statement, adding that a "terrorist element" was behind the incident.

No damage was reported to the vessel or its cargo.

Full details of the attack were not given, but Reuters quoted shipping sources as saying they heard the sound of two explosions as the ship passed through the waterway.

In response to the incident, Memish said the armed forces have issued an order to strengthen their security along the Canal.
