The Port of Antwerp has begun requesting proposals for the construction and operation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering and filling facility, the port announced Wednesday.

While LNG refueling has been available by truck since 2012, there is currently no permanent facility to accommodate bunkering, the port said.

The plan was originally to invest in building a facility but for it to be operated by a third party, though plans have reportedly changed so that the port is now looking for a third party to take over the entire process.

According to the report, preliminary studies of Quay 528, the intended piece of land for the facility, estimated that it can accommodate a station with 450 cubic metres of storage capacity.

A safety study has also reportedly shown that up to 45,000 cubic metres of LNG can be bunkered annually at a filling rate of 100 cubic metres per hour.

The deadline for submissions October 5, 2015.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the port had begun granting discounts on port dues to ships using LNG fuel or scrubber systems to reduce harmful emissions.
