Divers were looking for possible leaks in a Terntank Rederi A/S (Terntank) fuel tanker carrying 12,000 tonnes of diesel and gasoline, after a collision Sunday morning with a passenger ferry Stena Jutlandica near Gothenburg Harbour, local media reports.

"We are seeing how extensive the damage is and if there is a risk that leaks will develop later," said Kalle Isaksson of the Swedish Coast Guard.

The collision left a hole in the side of the ferry, which was reportedly on its way from Fredrikshamn, Denmark to Gothenburg.

The ferry was said to have began taking on water as a result of the damage, but was able to make it safely to harbour under its own power.

No injuries were reported among the approximately 600 people on board the ferry, including passengers and crew, said Stena Line.

"I think it's too early to speculate about what happened. We have the police and the Coast Guard who are looking into it," said  Tryggve Möller, chairman of the board of Terntank.

Police have launched a preliminary investigation into the incident and will see if either of the captains will face charges of negligence.

However, Niclas Mårtensson, Deputy CEO of Stena Line, commenting on the collision, said, "it was the tanker that hit us, not the other way around."

In February, Stena Line's Holyhead-Dublin ferry, Stena Nordica, collided with a bunker barge.
