Polish Port to Receive EU Funds to Prepare for LNG Bunkering Facility
The Port of Świnoujście in Poland will receive funding from the European Union (EU) to prepare an area for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering facility, the European Commission's (EC) Innovation and Networks Executive Agency has announced.
Plans to prepare grounds for an LNG facility at the port are part of a larger €2 million ($2.3 million) project which will also see infrastructure upgrades at the Port of Trelleborg in Sweden.
The project is part of the the EC's TEN-T Programme, which aims for the construction of LNG refueling stations at all core European ports by 2030.
In addition to increasing the two ports' competitiveness and sustainability, the goal is to also improve the maritime link between the two countries, as traffic is expected to increase by 40 percent.
A study on the LNG facility will also be commissioned, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
As for Trelleborg, the port will see extensive upgrades, including a new traffic management system, new drainage and water management systems, and an extended fairway.
Another LNG facility project partially funded by the TEN-T Programme was announced earlier this year for the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark.
