A "significant" fuel oil spill in the waters of Turkey's Izmit Bay caused all traffic to be halted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, GAC has advised.

The spill is said to have resulted from a leak at one of the Poliport Terminal's shore tanks.

Local media reports that authorities began pollution response efforts immediately, halting traffic and dispatching clean up crew vessels, skimmers, and booms.

Authorities are noted to be investigating the cause of the leak, and had been inspecting vessels that had passed through the area.

The Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications says traffic has been reopened since the incident, and the spill was under control.
