A new fishing vessel delivered to Herøyhav AS of Norway promises high fuel efficiency and low emissions thanks to a hybrid propulsion system, according to MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN Diesel), which provided the ship's propulsion package.

The trawler/purse seiner, built at Karstensens Shipyard in Denmark, uses a hybrid system that combines electric and diesel power, producing greater propeller efficiency for ships that must operate at a variety of power levels.

With many operational modes, the engine and propeller can run optimally over a large power range.

The propulsion package includes a MAN 9L27/38 engine, a two-speed reduction gear driving a MAN Alpha 4,2000 mm diameter ducted propeller and a MAN Diesel Alphatronic 2000 propulsion control system including a voyage optimisation system.

DNV said last year that Norway is leading the adoption of hybrid propulsion technology.
