The World Ports Climate Initiative (WPCI)'s LNG Fuelled Vessels Working Group has launched a website focused on the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel, according to the Port of Antwerp, which leads the working group.

The site is designed to raise awareness of LNG bunkers among port authorities, fuel suppliers, and shipping companies. It focuses on the use of the fuel and the technical requirements for ships and bunkering infrastructures, as well as the business case for LNG.

The working group has developed LNG bunker checklists for ship-to-ship, shore-to-ship, and truck-to-ship bunkering to reduce the potential for confusion that might occur if different ports used different regulations.

"LNG is obviously the ship's fuel of the future and ports are preparing to offer safe storage and bunkering of LNG for shipping lines in or near their port areas," the Port of Antwerp said in the statement.

"By using bunkering checklists, a high level of quality and responsibility of the LNG bunker operators can be ensured."

The site also includes details on International Maritime Organisation (IMO), U.S., and European Union (EU) environmental regulations, as well as a world map showing planned and potential bunkering locations.

The Port of Antwerp and other European and U.S. ports announced the creation of the working group in March of 2013.
