Norwegian LNG Bunkering Station to Open in Summer
Norwegian natural gas company Skangass says it will build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering station in Risavika to serve Fjord Line's cruise ferries.
The company has received approval from Norwegian regulators for the project, which is already underway, and plans to start operations in the summer of 2014.
The bunkering station will allow the ferries to take on fuel while passengers are on board, something made possible by a change in Norwegian regulations announced last month.
Skangass promises to minimise the ferries' turnaround time in port "as much as possible."
"High capacity and efficiency when bunkering is an essential condition for LNG being a preferred solution for the marine market," it said.
"Bunkering while having passengers on board will reduce the turnaround time for ferries running on LNG."
Fjord Line has said the change in Norwegian regulations will allow it to move 80 percent of its bunkering to the Risavika facility.
