Orkney Islands Council Marine Services (Orkney Islands Council) Tuesday announced that the Scottish archipelago will receive a new bunker service after Simpson Oils Ltd (Simpson Oils) signed a two year agreement to provide low sulfur marine gas oil )(MGO) to vessels using Kirkwall harbour, Hatston Pier, and Scapa Flow.

"We recognise the considerable investment over the past few years that Orkney Islands Council has expended in its port infrastructure to attract new business from the energy and marine tourism sectors, and we see a mutually advantageous opportunity to work closely with the Harbour Authority in the provision of marine gas oil bunkering to service current and attract new stakeholders," said Hugh Simpson of Simpson Oils.

The new service is said to provide flexibility to the market for a wide variety of ship types, allowing vessels to bunker both at berth and at anchor.

"We will monitor closely the impact of bunker provision on our existing and developing markets and analyse what revenue growth we can attribute to this crucial additional service both for our ports and the local supply chain," stated the Orkney Islands Council in the announcement.

In July, Ship & Bunker reported that DFDS Seaways and Scotland-based Forth Ports Limited planned to invest €6 million ($6.6 million) into infrastructure and technology upgrades at Scotland's Port of Rosyth.
