Malta's Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries and the National Fisheries Cooperative says Mediterranean Offshore Bunkering Company Limited (MOBC) has been taken to court after owners of a fishing trawler Consiglia Madre, filed proceedings, Maltese media reports.

The vessel owners claim diesel supplied by MOBC contained excessive water, and are claiming for compensation for engine damage sustained as a result of the off spec fuel.

Tests conducted by Inspectorate Malta Ltd is reported to have shown that the fuel's water content was twice the legal maximum.

The vessel owners have requested the court to condemn MOBC, ordering the bunker supplier to compensate the fishermen for the engine damage and loss of income incurred while repairs were being conducted.
