Brittany Ferries Wednesday announced that it has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Germany's Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (FSG) for the construction of a new ship, set to feature liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

"It will be one of the cleanest, most environmentally-friendly ships to operate in UK waters because LNG emits less carbon dioxide during combustion than marine fuel oil and burns with no smoke. In addition it is free of sulphur and is very low in nitrogen oxide emissions," stated the company.

The contract for the vessel is said to be expected for signing in spring 2017, with delivery of the competed new ship set for 2019.

The newbuild is slated to operate on the Portsmouth-Caen, offering three daily return sailings.

"The signing of this letter of intent with the Flensburger shipyard is a concrete step towards the construction of a new generation of Brittany Ferries ships," said Christophe Mathieu, CEO of Brittany Ferries.

"Despite Brexit, we remain confident in our ability to continue to grow and modernise our route network, serving both tourism and trade in the regions of western Europe."

The latest announcement is said to highlight Brittany Ferries' commitment to reducing its operations' environmental impact through new technologies, and follows the completion initiative that saw the installation of exhaust gas scrubber systems across six of the company's 10 vessels.
