"Very Few" Cases of ECA Non-Compliance in Europe So Far
According to the European Commission (EC), the number of Emission Control Area (ECA) non-compliance cases in Europe have been "very few" to date, IHS Maritime 360 reports.
EC environment spokesman Enrico Brivio said there are currently 200 inspection cases logged in the European Maritime Safety Agency's voluntary reporting system.
"So far, the Commission is not aware of any particular, major problem," Brivio said.
"But since the low sulfur requirements in the SECAs only entered into force on 1 January 2015, it is still too early to draw any clear conclusion."
The hope is that the system will help member states accurately assess the prevalence of non-compliance.
Since the beginning of the year, stricter regulations have limited sulfur content in marine fuel used in ECAs to 0.10 percent by weight.
Earlier this week Maersk Line reiterated its concerns about weak enforcement of ECAs, especially in Europe.
