Fathom Spotlight: The Industry's Finest Shortlisted for Fathom's Ship Efficiency Awards 2014

This week the shortlisted finalists for the inaugural Ship Efficiency Awards 2014 were announced, an award ceremony launched by Fathom to recognise and celebrate the organisations, individuals and initiatives within the maritime sector that are driving fresh thinking around efficiency, catalysing technological innovation and successfully making waves within the industry through efficient operations.

In this week's spotlight we review the shortlisted finalists who will vie for contention across six award categories.

An Overwhelming Industry Response

Fathom has received an overwhelming number of nominations for this year's inaugural awards, a demonstration in itself of the immense efforts being undertaken to improve efficiency across the industry.

The Judges

The shortlisted nominees were assessed and selected by an expert panel that included:

  • Martin Stopford - Non-Executive President of Clarkson Research Services Ltd

The judges had the tremendously difficult task of shortlisting five nominees into each category. This nominees are as follows:

Energy Efficiency Solution Award - An award for an innovative solution that implements fresh thinking and offers significant proven efficiency benefits.

Environmental Technology Award - An award that recognises a technology that makes a significant contribution to environmental impact reduction or prevention to ships.

  • Hempel AS – Hempaguard
  • International Paint – Intersleek 1100SR
  • Micanti BV – Thorn-D
  • Terragon – Micro Auto Gasification System (MAGS)

Initiative of the Year - This award celebrates projects that support the maritime industry in improving environmental performance or energy efficiency. This award covers initiatives such as classification society work, collaboration projects, and academic projects.

  • Corvus & Scandlines – Scandlines Hybrid Ferries
  • Eco Marine Power – Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project
  • Green Marine – Environmental Certification Program
  • Jotun – Hull Performance Solutions

Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year - An award to honour a ship owner, operator or manager that demonstrates an industry-leading commitment to energy efficiency, environmental performance or CSR responsibilities.

The One to Watch - This award recognises a project, concept or technology which has the demonstrable potential to improve the efficiency of an aspect of ship operations along with evidence of real uptake and growth potential.

Outstanding Contribution to Ship Efficiency – AS VOTED BY YOU - An award for a contribution by an individual, company or association towards an improved outcome for the environment from the maritime industry. This can include offshore and on-shore projects, technology advancements in shipping and shipbuilding; training and education, public awareness campaigns etc.

When is the Awards Ceremony?

The award winners will be presented at a ceremony hosted by Lloyd's Register on the 2nd October 2014 in London, as part of Ship Efficiency: The Event, held in association with Inmarsat. Ship Efficiency: The Event 2014 will take place between 1-2 October at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, with speakers from across the maritime industry providing insight and stimulating discussion about efficiency solutions, strategies and technologies. Also, an exhibition will run alongside the event, showcasing innovative solutions from a number of technology providers.

Over 250 attendees from across the maritime industry are expected to attend, including ship owners & managers, class societies, brokers, charterers, bankers & insurers, academics, lawyers, regulators and maritime technology providers.
