Wärtsilä Corporation Friday announced it has partnered with Carnival Corporation to optimise engine room operations aboard the cruise company's fleet of 101 vessels in order to "significantly contribute to reducing fuel consumption."

Last year Carnival reported it spent over $2 billion on bunkers.

Wärtsilä says it will supply technologies and systems, including engine control and monitoring systems, and safety and fuel efficiency packages, to several Carnival vessels under pilot projects.

Also to be installed on the vessels is Wärtsilä's Asset Performance Optimisation Solution, which the firm says maximizes performance and ensures that systems are operating at their full capabilities, increasing predictability of maintenance needs and fuel management.

"Since last summer, teams from Carnival Corporation and Wärtsilä have met regularly to ensure that each of these solutions adds value to the company's fleet," said Bill Burke, chief maritime officer, Carnival Corporation.

Tomas Hakala, vice president, services, Wärtsilä, remarked that "We believe this is the beginning of a close and fruitful relationship between Carnival Corporation and Wärtsilä. The valuable insights that we are gaining can also be further utilised with other product families and vessels."

In December Carnival said it expects its full year 2015 bunker bill to decrease by $475 million over 2014's spend of $2.033 billion.
