Fourteen more shipping companies have joined the Trident Alliance, which the group said aims to promote the enforcement of upcoming sulfur regulations.

"It is reassuring to witness that so many companies want to make sure the new regulations are implemented in a way that ensures the expected environmental benefits as well as a level playing field," said chairman of the alliance Roger Strevens

Upcoming sulfur regulations will apply to Emission Control Areas (ECA), which will limit sulfur content in marine fuel used in ECAs to 0.10 percent by weight beginning next year.

The 14 new companies include Hapag-Lloyd and DFDS Seaways, and they will join another 18 members to make up 31 in total.

Companies such as Maersk Line, Stena Line and Unifeeder are already part of the alliance.

Each company's CEO has reportedly signed a declaration of commitment to "supporting robust and transparent enforcement of sulfur regulations as well as to comply with said regulations."

The alliance first announced its formation in May of this year.
