MOL Announce Safety Inspections for MOL Comfort Sister Vessels
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) said Tuesday it is arranging the inspection of all six sister vessels of the containership MOL Comfort, which last week broke in two while under way from Singapore to Jeddah.
MOL said the cause of the incident has not yet been identified, and will undertake the inspections "as quickly as possible" with the vessels' shipbuilder, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and the classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).
The inspections of MOL Creation, MOL Charisma, MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, MOL Competence, and MOL Commitment are in addition to the ones carried out by the crew during navigation, they said.
MOL says it has also started operational precautions to reduce the stress on the hull as an interim contingency plan.
In an additional announcement today, MOL says that it has now discovered oil film for the aft part of the vessel, but reiterated that there was "no large volume of oil leakage."
Previous reports have ranged between an "indeterminate quantity" of oil being spilled, to there being no oil film at all.
