Total Lubmarine has launched a new lubricant that reduces the risk of cold corrosion in electronically controlled engines and in Mark 8.1 and newer engines, the company said in an emailed press release.

Known as the Talusia Universal 100, the product follows guidance from engine makers for the management of severe cold corrosion in new engines, which Total Lubmarine said often have longer stroke lengths, lower rotations per minute, and increased scavenge and combustion pressures.

These features reduce fuel consumption and emissions but increase the risk of corrosion, particularly in combination with the use of heavy fuel oils (HFOs) of varying quality and sulfur levels.

"With the introduction of TALUSIA UNIVERSAL 100, we are ensuring our customers have a choice of lubricants and can easily adhere to the latest recommendations from engine manufacturers," said company director Norbert Schieren.

"Although these new engines currently represent just 10 per cent of the market, we appreciate that demand is growing."

MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN Diesel) and Wärtsilä Corp. (Wärtsilä) have both said that growing demand for fuel efficiency is driving sales of modern engines and other advanced technology.
