Damen Shipyards Group (Damen) Tuesday announced that it is preparing to launch a fuel efficient water bus - the first composite water bus to be developed by the company.

The Damen water bus prototype's fuel efficiency is said to be ensured by its slender hull, low weight compared to conventional aluminium vessels, low resistance, and low wake production.

"This is a prototype for the first of the new generation Damen Water Bus. We believe in this new composite vessel and the benefits it offers to clients," said Marcel Elenbaas, Damen Design & Proposal Engineer - Fast Ferries.

"The Damen Water Bus is the best fit for highly congested urban areas, providing a simple and efficient way of making use of natural waterways, and consequently integrating into the public transport network. Hence the reason we took the decision to invest in developing this new series."

The 100 passenger capacity vessel is said to be able to travel at up to 21 knots or 40 km per hour.

Damen says the prototype is set to undergo sea trials within the next few weeks, and notes that vessel design can be tailored to specific customer requirements.

The first Damen water bus is said to be slated for arrival in the Netherlands before the end of the year, with another water bus hull in stock ready for outfitting.

Earlier this month, Ship & Bunker reported that Damen has launched a new concept design for a feeder container ship, which includes an option to use LNG propulsion.
