A ship said to be the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled cargo carrier has begun testing near the port of Zhangjiangang in eastern China, Chinese news service Xinhua reports.

The 5,000 deadweight-tonne ships, one of two LNG-fuelled vessels ordered by Norwegian logistics and shipping company Nor Lines AS, is due for delivery in June.

Shipbuilder Tsuji Heavy Industries did not say when the second ship will be completed.

Nor Lines ordered the ships, which use Rolls-Royce's fuel-saving Environship design, in 2011, according to natural gas vehicle industry site NGV Global.

Norway has been at the forefront of a number of advances in LNG bunkering, including the world's first tug to be powered exclusively by the fuel.
