The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Thursday said it was overseeing response in the Sabine-Neches Waterway near Nederland, Texas after approximately 460 gallons of Number 2 marine fuel was spilled during a bunkering operation at the Sunoco Partners facility on Wednesday at 8:24 p.m.

An absorbent boom is said to have been deployed to contain the fuel after the incident, and skimmers were working Thursday to recover product in the water.

"Texas General Land Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Jefferson County Emergency Management, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Coast Guard are working together to mitigate the situation and ensure that it is handled in a timely manner," said USCG.

The waterway was closed Wednesday night from light 28 to Sun Anchorage, and vessels transiting the area are now limited to minimum wake and no passing in the affected area.

USCG says an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
