Crowley Maritime Corporation (Crowley) today announced that it has signed an agreement with ExxonMobil and Eagle LNG Partners LLC (Eagle LNG) to collaborate on the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.

The cooperation is intended to establish storage and technical support needed to provide "safe, reliable" LNG bunkering in North America.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which the three companies signed on Tuesday, efforts will be initially focused in Florida before being expanded to other North American locations.

"The Memorandum of Understanding is another major step forward in developing LNG as a marine fuel. It will leverage the specialist knowledge and expertise of ExxonMobil, Eagle LNG Partners and Crowley to the benefit of vessel operators bunkering in North America," said Luca Volta, LNG Venture Manager at ExxonMobil.

"This agreement provides additional opportunities for vessel operators looking to adopt LNG as a marine fuel."

Crowley explains that, under the companies' cooperation, ExxonMobil will provide its technical support and expertise to help carry out bunkering operations and sell LNG bunker fuel to vessel operators, Eagle LNG will supply the LNG and will design, build, and operate small-scale production and storage facilities, as well as coordinate land-based LNG transportation, and Crowley will provide bunker logistics.

In March, Crowley released a video highlighting progress the company, along with Eagle LNG, had made on its LNG bunker facility at the Port of Jacksonville.
