Fuel Leaking from Sunken Vessel in Alaska
Fuel continues to leak from a fishing vessel that sank June 30th in the Igushik River near Dillingham, Alaska, local public radio station KDLG reported Tuesday.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game closed the local setnet fishery along Igushik Beach and placed a six-mile closure around the sunken vessel, the Lone Star.
Responders said they planned to pump fuel off the vessel Wednesday, if weather permits.
The vessel's owner, Burrece Fisheries Inc., is accepting claims for removal costs and uncompensated damages.
The U.S. Coast Guard said last week that the ship was reported to have 14,000 gallons of diesel, 150 gallons of lube oil, 150 gallons of hydraulic fluid, and 250 gallons of gasoline onboard, along with 35,000 pounds of fish, when it sank.
A two-mile sheen was seen around the sunken ship last Wednesday, but it dissipated by Friday.
The 78-foot vessel was at anchor on June 30 when a change in tide swung the ship against the anchor chain, detaching transducer and coolant lines and making a hole in hull, a crew member told the Coast Guard at the time.
