Port Alberni on the Canadian West Coast is considering building a CAD1 billion ($943 million) short-sea shipping facility that would be the largest container port in the nation, Canadian newspaper The Province reports.

Cargo ships from Asia would drop containers at the port rather than continuing to the Port of Vancouver or to Tacoma, Washington on the U.S. west coast.

"They could save three-and-a-half days on each shipment," said Zoran Knezevic, CEO of the Alberni Port Authority.

The port is seeking support for a study of the concept from regional planning group Metro Vancouver.

The study is expected to cost about CAD500,000 ($472,000).

In addition to containers, the facility might also be connected to a gas pipeline and used to ship liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Energy companies including Chevron and Petronas are working on LNG pipeline projects in Canada.
