DuPont Monday announced that its business unit DuPont Sustainable Solutions has been awarded a contract to supply the company's Marine Scrubber systems for two newbuilds owned by Vulica Shipping Co.

The contract was awarded by Jiangsu Hantong Shipyard Heavy Industry Co., for two self-unloading bulk carriers.

DuPont added that the scrubber systems to be used were developed by the company's subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation, and include one multi-inlet scrubber for exhaust from multiple auxiliary engines, and one single-inlet scrubber dedicated to the main engine.

These systems will meet requirements from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on SOx emissions and wash water, and will also reduce particulate matter, DuPont noted.

The scrubber systems were also said to feature a "run-dry" capability that allows it to handle hot exhaust gas even if the scrubber is not running and no water is being sprayed.

"This allows operators to easily move in and out of Emission Control Areas without the need for a bulky bypass," it says.

These are said to be the first two Vulica vessels to include scrubbers, with the company planning to operate the ships throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

The first unit is expected to be delivered late in 2016, proceeding to sea trial performance testing during 2017.

In September 2015, Ship & Bunker reported that U.S. ECA rules had prompted a seven-year high in newbuild orders for compliant vessels.
