Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (Waigaoqiao), a shipyard affiliated with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), says it has received orders for the construction of up to 10 fuel efficient "green" bulkers that it says will reduce bunker consumption by 20 percent and improve transport capacity by 30 percent compared with its previous design.

The ships, 180,000 dead weight tonne (dwt) Capesizes, were ordered by two well known but undisclosed European owners.

The contract calls for Waigaoqiao to build six of the ships and gives the owners an option to order four more.

Waigaoqiao says the ships use an optimised hull design including a non-bulbous bow shape and a long stroke engine design that reduces engine speed, all of which help save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

The ship builder says it has delivered more than 100 Capesize bulk carriers.
