Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) today announced that it will supply the exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber) for a new ferry being built for South Korea's Weidong Ferry Co., Ltd. (Weidong Ferry) at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

The contract is noted to mark the first time a Wärtsilä scrubber system will be installed where the shipyard, the owners, and the vessel's operational area are all located in South Korea.

"This is an important order since it strengthens our visibility in the Asian market. Exhaust gas cleaning is something that ship owners and operators around the world are having to take very seriously, since the IMO's global cap on the sulfur content in marine fuel comes into effect in 2020, which is really rather soon," said Sigurd Jenssen, Director, Exhaust Gas Cleaning at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions.

"Wärtsilä has tremendous experience and a broad range of systems to help our customers comply with these regulations."

Under the contract, Wärtsilä will supply two 13 MW Open Loop V-SOx scrubbers specifically optimised for the new vessel.

The 31,000 gross tonne (GT) RoPax ferry will sail between South Korea and China when put into operation by Weidong Ferry.

Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is slated for July of this year.
