Singapore Adds 53 More Ships to its Green Ship Programme
Another 53 ships from 41 companies have joined Singapore's Green Ship Programme (GSP) at the Third Singapore Registry of Ships Forum, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has announced.
Under the GSP, which was launched in 2011 as a component of the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative, a total of 247 ships have been designated Green Ships and enjoy tax rebates and reduced registration fees for their efforts to reduce carbon dioxide and sulfur oxides emissions.
The forum also saw 10 maritime companies sign the Maritime Singapore Green Pledge, which obliges them to support and promote clean and green shipping in Singapore; this brings the total number of signatories to 100 firms.
Andrew Tan, chief executive for the MPA, said, "We are pleased to see continuing strong industry support for the Green Ship Programme and Maritime Singapore Green Pledge."
He added, "We will continue with our efforts to promote cleaner, safer and more efficient shipping."
With this year's theme being "Quality Shipping", the forum recognized five companies for contributing up to the 85th million gross tonnage in the Singapore Registry of Ships tonnage; additionally during the event, a memorandum of understanding was signed between MPA and Du Pont Company (Singapore) to collaborate on maritime industry services and solutions.
Singapore has focused on sustainability in recent years, and in addition to the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative, it has created a $100 million Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund to pay for research and development of new, green technology,
