Japanese shipping line Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. (K-Line) has ordered a vessel with an engine designed to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources speaking ahead of an official announcement.

The engine reportedly will be used in a car carrier scheduled to be completed in January 2016.

The engine and other technical design changes are expected to add about 10 percent to the cost of the ship.

K-Line will also use a scrubber to remove sulfur oxides (SOx) from the ship's exhaust to meet the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)'s new standards.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries developed a engine that reduces NOx emissions to meet IMO regulations.

NOx emission rules have been the subject of debate, with the IMO announcing in May that it would delay the entry into force of new rules applicable to ships built starting in 2016.
