India’s Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. (GESCO) has ordered three eco-design dry-bulk Kamsarmax ships from Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ltd. in China, the business news service Live Mint reports.

“We are rebuilding our dry-bulk fleet,” a spokeswoman for the company said.

“In the last 4-5 years, we had downsized our dry bulk portfolio.”

GESCO did not disclose the cost of the ships, which are scheduled for delivery in 2016, but shipbroker RS Platou Economic Research SA puts the cost of a Kamsarmax ship at $29 million.

The ships’ eco-design features will improve their fuel efficiency and company with Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements.

GESCO also recently signed a deal with MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN Diesel) to retrofit one of its tankers with fuel-saving propellers.
