Danish chemical tanker company Nordic Tankers Group (Nordic Tankers) said today it has appointed Claus Thornberg, its current head of fleet management and former chief operations officer, as its new president and CEO, effective July 1.

"Claus has substantial managerial experience from operation, chartering, technical management, new buildings, sale and purchase as well as strategic development," said Terje Askvig, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

"He has a strong track-record and he has demonstrated leadership.

"The Board looks forward to have him lead the way with our strategy to consolidate the chemical tanker segment."

The Danish government has appointed Nordic Tanker's current head, Tommy Thomsen, as CEO for the Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), and Thomsen will also join Nordic's board of directors.

"After 35 years in shipping, Tommy has decided to pursue other opportunities and we congratulate him on his new position," Askvig said.

"Tommy has done an excellent job in combining herning shipping and Nordic Tankers into one of the leading chemical tanker operators."

Thornberg, 47, has 29 years of experience in shipping, having worked as a navigator and captain on chemical tankers before joining TSMA Ship Management and then serving as CEO of TESMA Group from 2002 to 2006 and as chief operations officer of Clipper Tankers from 2009 to 2010.

At Nordic Tanker, Thornberg's current responsibilities include Strategic Projects including Sales & Purchases and Mergers & Acquisitions, and he was previously the head of commercial and operational activities.

"Nordic Tankers has been building a strong foundation with focus on safety, customer service and business optimization," Thornberg said.

"We are now well positioned and the organization is geared for further growth."

Nordic Tankers, which combined its operations with herning shipping a.s. last year, operates a fleet of up to 120 chemical tankers, according to its website.
