Anthony Verder today announced that a naming ceremony was held Monday for Coralius - said to be the first European-built liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker and distribution vessel.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the new vessel is to be chartered by Skangas AS (Skangas) under a long-term agreement with the vessel's joint venture owners Sirius Shipping and the Anthony Veder through Sirius Veder Gas AB (Sirius Veder).

"Bunkering LNG ship-to-ship increases the accessibility of this marine fuel for our customers," said Kimmo Rahkamo, CEO of Skangas at the ceremony.

As previously reported, the 5,800 cubic metre (cbm) vessel will be employed between the Kiel Canal and mid-Norway, including part of the North Sea, and will be used to supply LNG in ports and at sea.

"It is a very valuable add-on to our existing bunkering methods of truck and terminals along the coast. Thanks to Coralius, from July onwards, our customers are going to experience swifter and more flexible bunkering operations than ever before," said Jan Valkier, CEO of Anthony Veder.

Jonas Backman, CEO of Sirius Shipping, commenting on the development, said: "I am very happy to see the development of this vessel become reality following our close co-operation with Skangas and Anthony Veder. This ship considerably strengthens our position in the local market and we are excited to bring our knowledge to this project."

As Ship & Bunker reported in October, Coralius will be used by Skangas to supply LNG bunkers to Statoil ASA (Statoil) platform supply vessels (PSVs) at several bases along the Norwegian west coast.
