LNG Bunkers Considered for Greek Ferries
Use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel for ferries in Greece could complement small-scale distribution of the fuel for other uses, an executive of Greek energy company Depa told shipping industry news site TradeWinds.
"Greece has a very specific geography," the company leader said.
"LNG is a solution to bring gas to remote areas.
"We think it could for sure be used in internal transport for ferries serving the islands."
He said two significant barriers to that solution are the cost of converting the ships to run on LNG and the need for a network of at least five or six ports offering LNG bunkers.
Qatar officials have been in discussions with Greek interests over the possibility of supplying natural gas to the nation's ship owners, and Qatar Petroleum International is said to be working with the Port of Piraeus on an LNG bunkering station.
