Polish shipyard Remontowa Shipbuilding it is constructing its largest ever gas-powered ferry, the company has said in a press release carried by Marine Link.

The shipyard has previously built eight ferries providing passenger transport on the Norwegian coast that can run on gas or diesel fuel, but the new ship is powered exclusively by liquefied natural gas (LNG) or, in emergencies, compressed natural gas (CNG).

The new ferry will have a capacity of 550 passengers and 165 cars, and it will use automation systems allowing for a reduced crew.

The vessel was designed by LMG Marin and Remontowa Marin Design & Consulting with supervision from classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA).

Norwegian ferry operator Fjord Line said last July that it would begin using the world's first two international cruise ferries powered solely by LNG, with the first ship scheduled for delivery in April 2013.
