Arrest Warrant for Italian Bunker Executive over Alleged Link to Libyan Fuel Smuggling Probe

An arrest warrant has been issued for Marco Porta, the managing director of Italian bunker company Maxcom Bunker, as part of an investigation by the Italian authorities into alleged Libyan fuel smuggling activities.

The warrant was issued alongside others for Maltese, Italian and Libyan nationals, according to local news provider Malta Today.

A statement on Maxcom Bunker's website distanced the company from the allegation and expressed surprise at the turn of events.

"In connection with the investigations on Dr Marco Porta, COO of Maxcom Bunker Spa on the hypothesis that Dr Porta would have deliberately purchased product allegedly stolen off Libya, Maxcom Bunker Spa proclaims its extraneity to the alleged offences and its deep surprise for the events," the statement said.

The statement continued the company appreciated Porta's decision "to leave his role within the company and any other in the group".

Maxcom Bunker is not under investigation nor is any company in the group, the statement said.

Maxcom Bunker's head office is in Genoa, north Italy.
