Copenhagen Malmö Port to Build Low Sulfur Fuel Terminal
A new terminal that will house low-sulphur marine diesel to help ships with Emission Control Area (ECA) sulfur compliance is being built at the Copenhagen Malmö Port, the port announced.
The project is being financed by the port in partnership with Scandinavian Tank Storage AB (STS), and will store fuel supplied by Statoil ASA.
The changes will see the construction of a dedicated bunkering quay to go along with the terminal.
"Malmö is strategically located for this type of activity, since more than 40,000 vessels a year pass through Öresund," said Leif Larsson, CEO of Scandinavian Tank Storage.
"We are naturally delighted that Statoil has chosen Malmö and ourselves as the strategic location and partner for fuel distribution."
Port CEO Johan Röstin said that he expected 170 vessels to use the new terminal for refueling per year, which in theory is one ship every other day.
Since the beginning of the year, sulfur content in marine fuel used in ECAs have been limited to 0.10 percent by weight.
It was reported back in 2013 that other Danish ports were planing more diesel storage facilities ahead of ECAs.
