The first land-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification facility, planned for Fujairah, has received government approval, regional business news site Arabian Business reports.

EmiratesLNG, a joint venture of International Petroleum Investment Co. (IPIC) and Mubadala Petroleum, will build and operate the facility, which will have an average throughput capacity of 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

The terminal will be able to accommodate the world's largest LNG carriers, allowing for the import of the fuel from anywhere in the world.

"EmiratesLNG will seize this opportunity to establish itself as a key player in the Middle East within the global LNG market," said CEO Ahmed Matar Al Mazrouei.

"The establishment of EmiratesLNG and its operation in the years to come is a significant contribution to the delivery of sustainable, secure, clean gas, helping ensure a prosperous future for the UAE."

In September, energy major Shell and Dubai Maritime City (DMC) signed an agreement to explore LNG fuel in the UAE and elsewhere in the region.
