Rolls-Royce has officially opened a new European Marine Technology and Training Centre in Ålesund, Norway.

The center is focused on the company's technology for offshore deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, with support for customer training and simulations.

"This excellent new facility will provide our customers with access to a broader range of support and training," said Tony Wood, Marine president for Rolls-Royce.

"This includes direct, hands-on training for engineers, crew and service technicians."

The new facility functions as the head office of a network of marine training centres including facilities in Singapore and the U.S., and it includes a full-scale offshore vessel bridge with a 360 degree field of vision where customers can practice ship manoeuvring, anchor handling, and other precise offshore operations.

The centre also offers simulators for winches, cranes, dynamic positioning systems, and other equipment, as well as workshop, classroom, and conference facilities for crew training.

The centre, which also includes offices for more than 500 Rolls-Royce employees, is located in the new Norwegian Maritime Competence Centre on the campus of Ålesund University College.

Rolls-Royce won the "Ship of the Year" award at the SMM marine industry trade show in September for a fuel-saving ship that Ålesund-based Farstad Shipping is using for offshore operations.
