The Rhenus Group (Rhenus) has announced that Rhenus Midgard is now operating a new tank wagon unloading station in Nordenham, Germany that the company says is being used to store and handle heavy oil for Aegean Bunkering Germany.

"Since this summer, our new tank wagon unloading station has provided us with a handling method that was not available in this form in the past," said Uwe Oppitz, Managing Director of Rhenus Midgard in Nordenham.

"By using this unit, we can fill two of our tanks, which together hold 10,000 cubic metres."

Each week since the tank wagon began operating in mid-July, one block train with 24 tank wagons, each containing 70 tonnes of heating oil, has arrived at the port of Nordenham, says Rhenus.

"The almost 1,700 tonnes of fuel arriving on each train from various refineries in Central and Eastern Europe – this corresponds to approx. 1,635 cubic metres – can be quickly and safely unloaded using the pump systems that form part of the new unit," added Rhenus.

The unit, said to have been built for €250,000 ($280,261), has enabled Rhenus Midgard to also invest in the expansion of existing structures to support its liquid goods business.

"Nordenham is the ideal site for this task as a result of its location and its railway connections and Rhenus proved to be very flexible when organising this project, said," Jens Reese, Bunker Trader at Aegean Bunkering Germany.

"As a heavy oil supplier, we're very happy with the professional standards used for handling liquid goods at this port site."

In January, Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc. announced it would launch physical bunkering operations in Germany having taken on two double-hulled barges previously under charter to OW Bunker.
