Norwegian energy company Statoil ASA has hired petroleum tanker company AET to operate two shuttle tankers around Norwegian North Sea oilfields in a long-term deal with extension options for up to 20 years, AET announced.

The vessels will be operated through AET Sea Shuttle AS, a joint venture company formed by AET and OSM Group, which will provide technical management for the two ships.

AET says the two twin-skeg 120,000 dwt tankers will be built to a higher standard than any other DP shuttle tanker in operation, with high-power thrusters and engines and the capacity to operate in harsh weather.

The ships may also be built with liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel powered engines under an option in the contract.

"This is a landmark partnership for AET and confirms our skills and experience in the specialist DP sector," said AET president and CEO, Hor Weng Yew.

AET, a subsidiary of MISC Bhd, is based in Kuala Lumpur and operates 82 petroleum tankers around the world, according to its website.
