Norway Chooses LNG to Power Two New Ferries
Two newly ordered dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ferries will start operations in Norway in the second half of 2015, industry news site Marine Log reports.
The vessels will be operated by Boreal Transport Nord (Boreal Transport) on behalf of the Finnmark County Council, serving routes starting at Øksfjord, in northern Norway.
The vessels will be built at Norway's Fiskerstrand shipyard and are being designed by Multi Maritime AS.
They use electric power transmission and azimuth thrusters and each have one LNG-driven genset and a backup diesel genset.
Each ferry has space for 40 cars and a passenger lounge for 100 people.
Multi Maritime said the designs reflect the fact that the routes are exposed to open sea and a ferry terminal position at Hasvik that demands a vessel air draft of no more than 15 metres.
The ships will be the first LNG-powered vessels for Boreal Transport.
Norway recently made a regulatory change to allow LNG-powered ferries to take on the fuel while passengers are on board, making the use of LNG bunkers more attractive.
