A bio-fuel plant is to be built in Norway following an agreement between marine technology provider Steeper Energy and hydropower company Silva Green Fuel.

The plant will be a showcase production unit for Steeper's hydrofaction technology and act as a precursor to Silva building similar units.

Hydrofaction technology is the property of Steeper Energy which "harnesses water brought to super-critical conditions, to cost effectively convert biomass to high-value liquid biofuels", the company said in a statement.

The plant will be capable of produced refined oil products including marine fuel.

"The demonstration plant will use woody residues as feedstock that are converted to renewable crude oil and, in turn, will be upgraded to renewable diesel, jet or marine fuel," the company said in a statement.

The plant will be based at a former pulp mill and cost EUR51 million ($60m) to build.
